Today we recall and remember those of our brothers and sisters who fell during, and since, the attacks on September 11, 2001.

GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

PRELUDE

"Prelude #1"

--  Ernest Bloch

GREETING & ANNOUNCEMENTS

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST  [Congregational Responses are in BOLD]

The Peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Let us extend the right hand of Christian fellowship to our neighbors.

*HYMN #454

"God of Our Fathers, Whose Almighty Hand"

*CALL TO WORSHIP  [Psalm 79:8a, 9a

Remember not our past sins;

Let your compassion be swift to meet us;

Help us, O God our Savior;

For the glory of your name;

Let us worship our God.

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of mercy and grace, help us to forgive those who hate us and despise us and attack our nation, help those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy.  Help us to trust you, even when faced with uncertainty and when it seems that all hope is failing.  Help us to recognize your presence and Holy Spirit among us and to truly follow you and trust in your redeeming love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever.  Amen.     [Followed by a moment of silent prayer.]

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Beloved, your sins are forgiven, for God promises to never leave us.  Therefore, be at peace and stand secure in the Lord.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.  Let us forgive one another.  Amen.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH  [“TheApostles' Creed“]

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.  On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

HYMN  #456

"Battle Hymn of the Republic"

PASTORAL PRAYER

OUR LORD’S PRAYER  [Matthew 6:9-13]

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our  debtors;  and  lead  us not into temptation,  but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.
