PRELUDE & QUIET MEDITATION  [Congregational Responses are in BOLD]

This coming Tuesday will mark the 500th Anniversary of when, on October 31, 1517 on All Hallows Eve, an Augustinian Monk by the name of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the front door of the Wittenberg Cathedral marking the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

"A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"

--  Johann Pachelbel

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST  [Congregational Responses are in BOLD]

The Peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Let us extend the right hand of Christian fellowship to our neighbors.

*HYMN #457

"I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art"

*CALL TO WORSHIP  [Psalm 90:1-2, 4-5]

Lord, you have been our refuge from one generation to another.  Before the mountains were brought forth, or the land and the earth were born, from age to age you are God.

You sweep us away like a dream; we fade away suddenly like the grass.

Let us worship our God.

Lord, we confess; we do not live as those worthy to be entrusted with the Good News of your grace; we relate to others callously as though we do not trust the Gospel ourselves; we seek to please and manipulate, using flattery to gain praise and distinction; we use condescension as a mask to cover insecurity or a need for power.  Our motives are mixed, impure.  Lord reassure us, cleanse us and forgive us, in your Holy Name.  Amen.  [Followed by a moment of silent prayer.]

Beloved, believe again the Gospel that in and through Jesus Christ we are accepted as we are.  Believe that we are forgiven, loved with the delight of a nursing mother cherishing her child.  Believe that we are the church, the body of Christ, called to love one another as gentle children of God.  I declare to you in the Name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.  Let us forgive one another.  Amen.

*HYMN  #579

"Glory Be to the Father"

Deuteronomy 34:1-12;

I Thessalonians 2:1-8;

Matthew 22:34-46

[Pages  189; 193; 297-298  --  in the red RSV Bible in each pew]

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH  [“The Apostles' Creed“]

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.  On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

HYMN  #466

"O, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing"

OUR LORD’S PRAYER  [Matthew 6:9-13]

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our  debtors;  and  lead  us not into temptation,  but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.

"I Sing a Song of the Saints of God"

--  arr.  Michael Burkhardt
