PRELUDE & QUIET MEDITATION  [Congregational Responses are in BOLD]

What misplaced burdens are you carrying?  Where might God be offering you a more well-fitted yoke?  Where do you sense God

moving in hidden ways?

GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

PRELUDE

"Lord Jesus Christ, Be Present Now"

--  J. S. Bach

GREETING & ANNOUNCEMENTS

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST  [Congregational Responses are in BOLD]

The Peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Let us extend the right hand of Christian fellowship to our neighbors.

*HYMN #482

"Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty"

*CALL TO WORSHIP  [Psalm 45:10-17]

Hear, O daughter, consider and incline your ear; forget your people and your father’s house,

And the king will desire your beauty.  Since he is your lord, bow to him;

The people of Tyre will seek your favor with gifts, the richest of the people with all kinds of wealth.

The princess is decked in her chamber with gold-woven robes; in many-colored robes is led to the king; behind her the virgins, her companions, follow.

With joy and gladness they are led along as they enter the palace of the king.

In the place of ancestors you, O king, shall have sons; you will make them princes in all the earth.

I will cause your name to be celebrated in all generations; therefore the peoples will praise you forever and ever.

Let us worship our God.

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Lord, we marvel at the thought of a well-fitted yoke, a burden scaled to match our frames; we do not know how to rest in the promise of such labor.  Some of us are weary from unceasing responsibility; others find no welcome in the marketplace.  We confound your vision for our common life.  Forgive our blind striving, our stifled concern, the judgments we cast on others.  Make yourself known to us in the silence.  Shape your children for the commonwealth of your love.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.

[Followed by a moment of silent prayer.]

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Sisters and brothers, hear this gospel word:  Now there are a varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are a varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are a varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.  To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, that your sin is forgiven.  You have been freed for service in his name.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.  Let us forgive one another.  Amen.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH  [“The Apostles' Creed“]

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.  We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.  For us and for our Salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.  For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.  On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;  he  ascended  into  heaven and is seated on the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.  We  believe  in  the  Holy  Spirit,  the  Lord,  the  giver  of  life,  who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son  is  worshiped  and   glorified,    who  has  spoken  through  the prophets.  We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.  We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

HYMN  #267

PASTORAL PRAYER

OUR LORD’S PRAYER  [Matthew 6:9-13]

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our  debtors;  and  lead  us not into temptation,  but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.
