PRELUDE & QUIET MEDITATION  [Congregational Responses are in BOLD]

Today in the Gospel lesson we learn of the Parable of the Sower and the Seeds.  Reminding us all of the old saying:  “We reap what we sow.”  Any gardener will tell you seed selection is important but, soil preparation is the real key.

GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

PRELUDE

"Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah"

--  arr.  David Paxton

GREETING & ANNOUNCEMENTS

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST  [Congregational Responses are in BOLD]

The Peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Let us extend the right hand of Christian fellowship to our neighbors.

*HYMN #139

"Come, Thou Almighty King"

*CALL TO WORSHIP  [Psalm 119:105-112]

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to observe your righteous ordinances.

I am severely afflicted; give me life, O Lord, according to your word.

Accept my offerings of praise, O Lord, and teach me your ordinances.

I hold my life in my hand continually, but I do not forget your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me, but I do not stray from your precepts.  Your decrees are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.

Let us worship our God.

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our offenses against you.  You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love.  Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease you.  Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light, and walk in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior.  Amen.  [Followed by a moment of silent prayer.]

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

By the obedience of one, Jesus Christ you have been counted righteous. Your prayers have reached God.  You have been delivered from death to life.  Grace abounds.  Believe the Good News!  I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.  Let us forgive one another.  Amen.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH  [“The Apostles' Creed“]

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.  We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.  For us and for our Salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.  For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.  On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;  he  ascended  into  heaven and is seated on the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.  We  believe  in  the  Holy  Spirit,  the  Lord,  the  giver  of  life,  who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son  is  worshiped  and   glorified,    who  has  spoken  through  the prophets.  We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.  We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

HYMN  #306

PASTORAL PRAYER

OUR LORD’S PRAYER  [Matthew 6:9-13]

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our  debtors;  and  lead  us not into temptation,  but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.
