(The liturgists with the congregation are a vital part of  this service, intended to be somber but not shocking.  The congregation will join in the singing of all hymns, the responses are indicated, and the prayers at each setting.  Scripture references are included so that you may have a record of this presentation of the darkest hours of human history.  An asterisk [*] indicates congregation standing, as physical condition may allow.  At the conclusion of the service please leave in silence.)

PRELUDE & QUIET MEDITATION

PRELUDE

"Interlude"

--  Jean Langlais

SENTENCES OF SCRIPTURE  [Congregational Responses are in BOLD]

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness;

by his wounds we have been healed.

For we were going astray like sheep,

but now we have returned to the shepherd and guardian of our souls.

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Merciful God, you gave your  Son to suffer the shame of the cross.

Save us from hardness of heart,  so that,  seeing him who died for us, we may repent, confess our sin, and receive your overflowing

love, in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

ANTHEM

"Drop, Drop, Slow Tears"

JESUS BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN

HYMN  #93     "Ah, Holy Jesus”  [verse 1]

Ah,  holy  Jesus,  how  have you offended,  That  mortal  Judgment h as on  you descended?   By  foes derided,   by  your  own rejected,

O most afflicted!

Matthew 26:57-75

Rev. Jim Spon

Lord Jesus, forgive us when we have taken lightly the injustice of human beings,  shown through  your  trial before  the  Sanhedrin.  Through  your  Holy  Spirit  help  us  to  live  for justice.  Then do  with us as you will.

JESUS BEFORE PILATE

HYMN  #97     "Go to ark Gethsemane”  [verse 2]

Follow to the  judgment  hall;   View the  Lord of  Life arraigned,  O the  wormwood  and  the  gaul!    O the  pangs his  soul sustained!

Shun  not  suffering ,  shame or lose;   Learn from  Christ to bear the cross.

Mark 15:1-20

Rev. Cindy Ploughe

Lord  Jesus,  forgive  us  when  we  have taken lightly our leaning toward   expediency  and    convenience,     shown   through   your

condemnation before  Pilate.   Through your  Holy  Spirit, help us boldly stand for the right.  Then do with us as you will.

JESUS CARRIES THE CROSS

HYMN  #98     "O Sacred Head Now Wounded”  [verse 1]

O sacred  head now wounded,  with  grief and shame weigh down, Now  scornfully  surrounded  with  thorns,   Thine  only  crown;   O

sacred  head  what  glory,    What  bliss  till  now  was  Thine!    Yet, despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine.

Luke 23:26-32

Rev. Ron Naylor

Lord  Jesus,  forgive  us  when  we  have taken lightly  the need to help others  bear  their burdens,   as  shown through  Simon  who

was compelled  to carry your  cross.    Through  your  Holy  Spirit, help us  to  be willing  to  share  the load  of  others and thus help

carry your cross.  Then do with us as you will.

JESUS IS CRUCIFIED

HYMN  #98     "O Sacred Head Now Wounded”  [verse 2]

What  Thou  my  Lord  hast suffered  was all for sinners gain;  Mine, mine was the transgression,  but thine the deadly pain.  Lo,  here I

fail,  my  Savior!   ‘Tis I deserve  thy  place;  Look on  me with  thy favor, vouch-safe to me thy grace.

Luke 23:33-43

Rev. Spon

Lord  Jesus,  forgive us when we  have taken lightly the senseless pain   we   inflict    on   one   another,      as   shown  through  your

suffering  at  the  hands of  the  Roman   soldiers.    Through  your Holy  Spirit   help   us  to  resolve  to  bring  comfort,    instead  of

suffering, to others.  Then do with us as you will.

JESUS:  "IT IS FINISHED!"

HYMN  #101     "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”  [verse 3]

See,  from  his  head,   his  hands,   his  feet,   sorrow  and  love  flow mingled  down;   Did  e’er  such  love  and  sorrow  meet,  Or thorns

compose so rich a crown?

Matthew 27:45-56

Rev. Ploughe

Lord  Jesus,  forgive us when we have  taken lightly the sacrifices others  have  made  on  our  behalf,   and  suffering  which  is  not

ours.   Through  your  Holy  Spirit  help  us  to mourn  with  those who  mourn  so  that  your  consolation  may  be  known  through

our caring presence.  Then do with us as you will.

JESUS IS LAID IN THE TOMB

HYMN  #102     "Were You There?”  [all verses]

Were you there when they crucified  my  Lord?

(Were you there?)

Were  you  there when they crucified my Lord?

Oh!   Sometimes it causes  me  to  tremble,  tremble,  tremble,

Were  you  there  when they crucified my Lord?

(Were you there?)

Were  you  there  when  they nailed Him  to  the tree?

(Were  you there?)

Were you  there when  they  nailed  Him to the  tree?

Oh!  Sometimes it  causes me  to  tremble,  tremble,  tremble,

Were  you there  when   they  nailed  Him  to  the  tree?

(Were  you  there?)

Were you there  when  they pierced  Him  in  the  side?

(Were you there?)

Were you there  when  they  pierced  Him  in  the side?

Oh!  Sometimes  it  causes  me  to  tremble,  tremble , tremble,

Were you there when they pierced Him in the side?

(Were you there?)

Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

(Were you there?)

Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

Oh!  Sometimes it causes me to tremble,  tremble,  tremble,

Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

(Were you there?)

EXTINGUISHING THE CANDLES AND DRAPING THE CROSS

*CONCLUDING PRAYER

Lord  Jesus  Christ,  Son  of  the living  God,  we  pray  you  to  set your  passion,  cross,  and  death  between your judgment and our

souls,  now and in the hour of our death.  Give mercy and grace to the living;  pardon  and  rest  to  the  dead;   to  your  Holy  Church

peace and  concord;  and  to  us  sinners everlasting life and glory; for  with   the  Father  and  Holy  Spirit  you  live  and  reign,   one

God, now and forever. Amen.
